Chicago the Musical
Date : 6th November, 2007
Venue : Plenary Hall, KL Convention Centre
Time : 8.00pm
I was excited when I heard that the Bronowski Productions coming to KL again for another play after the fantastic ‘My Fair Lady’ in April. Though it is yet to stand in par with Broadway and the West End, I didn’t expect less than perfection. So to speak, I rushed for the tickets a month earlier for tonight’s premiere as to enjoy a 30% discount.
Xiang and I walked in quite late at 8.30pm, only to be delayed further by a useless, incompetent organizing crew. Saved by another, however, we were guided to our seats.
The most friendly comment that I could give about the show is that it is the most uncreative and deceitful musical ever ! I should have bring a machine gun along and hose all those pranky dancers with bullets!
It’s beyond appalling. The stage has no passion at all – plain and stupid. The prop is so lacking that the scenes are just impossible to tell apart. The transitional is dull and ignores - instead of engage with - the audiences’ imagination.
And then it becomes conspicuous that the production has the most annoyingly limited wardrobe in the world. Each of the performers only wear a single outfit for the entire play. Imagine that.
The intermission somewhat saved us from that torment, but we were given another – the organizing crews blissfully yelling ‘programme book’ during the break. How convenient.
Nevertheless, some aspects of the play deserve some credit. The lighting and sound system was rather good and the Amos Hart character was played out brilliantly. For someone whom always being ignored and unnoticed in the play, he really stands out and seized the audience’s interest and laughter.
I just wish it was Paul Pott’s concert instead. It’s far more entertaining. Just in case you haven’t heard about him, take a peek at the video below. I still can’t believe this guy. He won the BGT ! =)
